Anyone who has hiked a trail or even stopped at an overlook along this highway knows that trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina rarely disappoint. Most deliver big views – and some deliver big physical challenges to boot. But not this one. This quaint little trail is the shortest and sweetest hike in North Carolina. Check it out. No, really, go check it out – in person.
Located at milepost 305.2 is a little parking area for adventure seekers who want to hike to a lookout point called Beacon Heights.
The trail is short, only 0.3 miles each way, but it's straight up the side of the mountain. The elevation gain is technically only around 100 feet. If you stop to think about it, that's almost the same as a ten-story building.
But if you find yourself a little short-winded due to the steep grade — and the unsteady footing among all the big rocks you have to navigate over — you'll be pleasantly surprised to find a bench or a big rock along the way on which to take a breather.
In warmer seasons, the path alternates between a shaded, mossy overgrowth and wide open spaces with some colorful fauna.
Once you find yourself at the top, turn to the right to see Grandmother Mountain (yes, she's definitely the spouse of nearby Grandfather Mountain). She's the one with the radio tower on top, so she's easy to spot.
The Beacon Heights overlook takes approximately 15 minutes to reach the summit — and at least another hour (or more!) before you have a real desire to leave.
The views stretch for what seems like infinity in this peaceful and serene spot on the parkway.
Have you hiked up to Beacon Heights yet? We’d love to see your photos!
