Most natives and visitors of North Carolina are aware of the town of Mt. Airy and that it’s the famous, iconic small town where Andy Griffith grew up and then created a 1960s TV show about his home town, which he renamed Mayberry. In the decades since the show aired, parts of Mt. Airy have essentially become Mayberry, USA, and visitors from all of the state and well beyond flock to the tiny iconic town made famous by the “Andy Griffith Show.”
A ride or walk through town yields dozens of reminders about the show as well as tributes to Andy himself. More than a folk hero, Griffith put Mt. Airy on the map.
Among all of the iconic businesses (Floyd's Main Street Barber Shop, The Snappy Lunch, and more) there's exactly one business dedicated to Andy's comic sidekick, Barney Fife.
Beloved by all, Don Knotts and his portrayal of the awkward deputy quickly won the hearts of viewers (both then and now).
So it's only befitting that he has his own Andy Griffith-themed diner right in Mayberry, USA. You'll find it right on N Main Street, adjacent to the Visitors Center and Chamber of Commerce.

A life-sized cutout of Deputy Fife is in the front window, keeping an eye on the goings on along the street, so be sure to use the crosswalks here - or you may get a ticket from Barney.
Barney's Burger is among the favorites, but you can also indulge in the Mayberry Club and more. There's even an entire section of items for the kiddos (think PB&J) called Opie's Lunchbox.
The cafe is open for breakfast early each day and then remains open until well past the lunch hour.
Breakfast includes Mayberry Breakfast favorites (French Toast and Pancakes were Andy's favorite), plus breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, and more.
Lunch includes delicious staples like soups, salads, sandwiches, and burgers.
Barney’s Cafe is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. The hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more on the official website and follow the Facebook page here.
Address: 206 N Main Street, Mt Airy, NC, 27030
