When it comes to getting away in the summer for a little R&R, many of us head right to the beach. With the anticipation building up to arrive on sandy shores and salt water, most of the time we drive straight to the most accessible beach to lay our towel set up the umbrella and post up by the waves all day. While easy access is good if you can deal with crowds or two, sometimes taking the path a bit further provides a much more memorable experience. While many North Carolina beaches are stellar, Bald Head Island, the land without cars (and accessible by ferry only) promises a one-of-a-kind experience.
Situated on 12,000 acres, with 10,000 of those remaining untouched, Bald Head Island is a dreamy getaway and unforgettable beach day wrapped into one. To access, you can take the ferry route from Southport.
BHI is a mix of residential dwellings, a few restaurants and shops, and 14 miles of pristine beaches. Once you step off the ferry, you'll leave your car (and most of your worries) behind.
Once there, there's plenty to see and do before hitting the beach. Rent a bike or golfcart to explore the maritime forests and miles of hiking and biking trails.
With beaches spanning the eastern, southern and western shore you're also treated to something otherwise not found on other North Carolina beaches - incredible sunrises and sunsets.
Each beach is named in accordance to the direction it faces.
If you're exploring North Beach, you're treated to stellar shell hunting and water sports. It's best during low tide and second best to West Beach in terms of sunsets. West Beach gives you views to the ferry coming in and out, and obviously great sunsets. Access 11 is a popular entranceway to the beach and great for long strolls. South Beach is the most popular for families and includes several access points and parking, it also offers decent waves for young swimmers to try their hand at boogie boarding. Last but not least, East Beach is the most popular spot for surfing, fishing, paddleboarding, and flying kites. The waves can get strong and its important to keep a close eye on little ones. Here, the water is always 5 degrees cooler than the other beaches and its a great place to escape strong, beach winds.
With four beaches to choose from, each offering their own unique aspects; it's easy to see why the journey to Bald Head is totally worth it.
Hopping on the ferry now! Bald Head Island is such a cool place. Have you visited or vacationed here before?
