Halloween seems to draw out the best ghost tales of the year. But we don’t need to make up or embellish the dismal fate of one Samuel Russell Jocelyn, who is attributed to being laid to rest at Saint James Churchyard Cemetery in Wilmington.
Jocelyn's gruesome end came about in 1809 as he was quite literally buried alive - by accident.
Her name was Mary Ann Simpson and she hailed from Sampson County, some 65 miles from Wilmington. Evidently, the two settled into married life near Wilmington and things were wonderful — until one fateful winter day when the two had a massive argument.
When the wooden coffin was uncovered and opened, it was apparent from the bloody fingertips of Jocelyn's fingers that he'd warmed up in his underground slumber and had awakened to find himself several feet under.
