While we may not enjoy planning for the worst case scenario, sometimes it’s helpful to have a rendezvous spot planned out for you and your loved ones in the event that something awful does happen. While none of us are hoping to ever live out an episode of The Walking Dead , have you ever taken the time to think about where you’d go if something like that hit the planet? In case this has never crossed your mind, we’ve put together a list of some the best places where you could go to hide in case a zombie apocalypse hit New York.
1. Singer Castle - Dark Island
It seems almost perfectly fitting that if you're going to flee to safety while the world is ending that it be to a place called Dark Island. Right near the Canadian border along the St. Lawrence River, the island has its own castle that will keep you safe and surrounded by water where you hopefully won't be able to find any terrifying zombies.
2. Lily Dale - Chautauqua County
Hiding out in any sort of gated community will give you a certain advantage to the end of days, but taking cover in one that's full of Mediums might just be the best you'll get in New York. The town has the advantage of sitting right on the shores of Cassadaga Lake and luckily the fact that its residents can talk to the dead will help you out in some way or another.
3. The Thousand Islands - St. Lawrence River
Speaking of ideal islands, pretty much any of the pieces of land you'll find along the St. Lawrence River should help keep you safe while the world is falling apart. While New York may not be able to claim all of the Thousand Islands as our own, there's definitely enough that should help keep a certain amount of us out of harm's way.
4. Niagara Falls - Niagara County
Hear me out on this one. Say we were able to stop the flow of the falls by building another dam like we did back in 1969 to create a situation where the waterfalls dried up. A large group of us could then make our way down the base of the falls and set up our apocalyptic shop along the Niagara River. Sure we may have to worry about the potential of the dam breaking at some point, but until then any zombies that try to attack us from the top of the falls would just fall of and presumably die at the base.
5. Howe Caverns - Schoharie County
Perhaps since things aren't going so great aboveground we might want to try turning ourselves into modern day mole people. If we could manage to find a way to keep the zombies out, we could just start a new underground world down here while we go for boat rides and pretend the apocalypse isn't actually happening. Sounds sort of dreamy, right?
6. Widow Jane Mine - Rosendale
When the zombie apocalypse hits and you're trying to figure out where you're going to head to for safety, try to keep abandoned locations in mind. A spot like Widow Jane Mine could potentially be a good location to set up shop if you could find a way to block off all the different entrances to the abandoned mine. The mine is deeper than most realize and if you can leave some of the entrances partially open at the top, you could get some light in here too!
7. Allegany State Park - Cattaraugus County
One of the larger state parks in New York, Allegany State Park sits along our Southern Tier and is a pretty remote location. The fact that it's not snug up next to any of our big cities is a benefit, as well as the fact that it's so huge it'll have the chance to let many of us settle down here. Those who are willing to hide away in dark spaces can claim dibs on one of the caves in the park's Thunder Rocks region, a promising area that has a decent shot at keeping you safe.
8. Rockland Psychiatric Center - Orangeburg
Not too far from the New Jersey border, we might have to fight over this place with some of our southern neighbors. The abandoned psychiatric center doesn't welcome visitors, but luckily during the zombie apocalypse no trespassing signs won't mean much of anything. Also, if this spot is good enough to be a filming location for Orange Is The New Black , then it can't be that bad of a safety getaway can it? The abandoned psychiatric center and all of its rooms would have the advantage of being able to provide a good amount of housing for those seeking safety.
9. Lockport Cave - Niagara County
Another situation that would have us living like mole people, those who are quick to think on their feet will be heading towards the Lockport Cave. Considering the sizes of Buffalo and Niagara Falls, those in the very westernmost parts of New York may be affected quite quickly. Be one of the lucky few to take coverage in these underground cave and tunnels and you probably won't regret it.
10. Fort Ontario - Oswego
For obvious reasons, taking shelter in any one of New York's historic forts would be a good idea during a zombie apocalypse, but Fort Ontario has some extra advantages. In the center of the fort, you'll find historic homes that you could live in, while the fact the fort is relatively far away from our biggest cities also gives it another appealing advantage.
11. Central Terminal - Buffalo
Abandoned since the late 1970s, the Buffalo Central Terminal is empty and waiting to keep you safe during a zombie apocalypse. The mostly abandoned property would provide spacious headquarters for safe spot in the big city and would probably be a fun place to call home during such horrendous times. Right?
