In New York, it isn’t just the warm weather that makes us anxiously waiting around for summer’s arrival — it’s also the food! Our favorite local farms begin to open up their stands for the year, and we begin to find ourselves uncontrollably drooling over the thought of things like fresh strawberries, peaches, and best of all… watermelon! Turning one tiny town into a total dreamland, mark your calendars and set aside this summer weekend when New York is the host of an amazing watermelon festival.
Take a drive out to the town of Mattituck and you'll have the pleasure of discovering Harbes Family Farm — a charming destination that's been around since 1978.
Throughout the year, Harbes Family Farm hosts a variety of festivals but our favorite one during the summer happens to be their annual Watermelon Festival.
The younger crowd will enjoy things like the festival's Seed Spitting Challenges, while the adults can sneak away to the Wine Barn to pair up their watermelon with some amazing wines.
And you won't want to miss out on the hilarity that comes along with games like the Watermelon Rolling Races and the hour-long Watermelon Eating Contest that all ages are allowed to join in on for free!
If you're wondering what else you can expect to experience here, there's quite a bit more! Live music will be held in the courtyard area from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and kids can enjoy the variety of fun activities that are available at the farm - from visiting the farm animals to watching the pig races and jumping on the jumbo bounce pillows that are set up.
