When the winter kicks in in upstate New York, it’s good to have a go-to burger joint with some reliable comfort food. If you’re in the Rochester area and haven’t visited Tom Wahl’s, check out this legendary spot for some classic, hearty food that has remained a local staple for years.
Over the course of several decades, Tom Wahl’s has become one of the most beloved burger joints in upstate New York. It all began back in 1955, when Tom and Bill Wahl officially opened a root beer stand in a trailer that served Twin Kiss ice cream to customers in Avon, New York.
Their specialty Wahlburger will have your mouth watering as soon as you spot it on the menu; a ground steak sandwich with ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce and Wahl sauce. They’ve also got a killer cheddar jalapeno burger, mushroom Swiss burger, bleu cheeseburger and Hollywood burger.
Even if you’re not a burger fan, don’t skip out on a trip to this Rochester institution; try one of their “junker plates,” served over French fries and macaroni salad, and smothered in onions, mustard and meat hot sauce. They’ve also got great sandwiches, fish entrees and value meals.
If you find yourself passing through Rochester, you’ve got a few locations to choose from; there are Tom Wahl’s restaurants in Bushnell’s Basin, Brighton, Newark, Canandaigua and Avon (there are also locations at Eastview Mall and Greece Ridge Mall).
If you’re looking to explore Rochester, check out Genessee Valley Park on the south side of the city, or head north and take in some great views of Lake Ontario.
