If you’ve been a longtime reader of Only In New York, then you might remember that in the past we’ve talked about some strange phenomena that you can easily experience for yourself in our state. From chilling gravity hills to the Lake George mystery spot that no one can explain, there are quite a few ways in New York for you to have some unusual fun.
Something you may not have realized though is that our largest state park is home to one of the most rare natural phenomena on the planet. A stunning event that only happens during the summer each year, keep reading to find out why Allegany State Park is the place to be from late June through mid-July.
Putting on a magical show for everyone who comes to visit, Allegany State Park becomes lit up with synchronous fireflies during a specific point in the summer.
From Georgia up to Southwestern New York, synchronous fireflies come together in dark mature forests to mate. While the time of year varies for each state and area, New York’s synchronous fireflies flock to Allegany State Park every year between late June and mid-July.
Known as the Photinus carolinus, this specific species of fireflies have their own special flash pattern that creates a one-of-a-kind view each year.
Did you know that there are over 170 species of fireflies in America and that each of them has their own unique flash pattern? Flying right above the forest floor, the males will simultaneously flash anywhere between four to ten seconds at a time, then altogether the males go dark.
Like with so many other species, the male fireflies put on a stunning show in an attempt to attract the females and mate with them. Depending on the temperature, the males will take ten to fifteen-second breaks in between their shows, waiting for females to respond by flashing their lights twice.

While the state park has yet to officially announce a set date, last year the park’s Environmental Education Department offered firefly hikes during the synchronous season. Beginning at 10 p.m., you’ll head into different areas of the state park to find the ultimate viewing points and wait for the show to begin. You may have seen fireflies dancing through your backyard in New York before, but seeing the synchronous dances of the fireflies at Allegany State Park is something that’s simply out of this world.
