John Williams is a writer based in New York City. He's been living in the state for over a decade. He loves nothing more than checking out some great regional cuisine and then taking a long walk in the park.
It often goes like this: the smaller the town, the better the pie. And boy is that true for Peru, New York, which is located in the northern part of the state and has a population of under 7,000 residents. It is also the home of Rulfs Orchard, which cranks out some of the best pie in the state. More than just food, the orchard is a great anchor for a day trip. And the charming small town of Peru can do the rest!
There is no question that Rulfs Orchard makes some of the best pie in northern New York. Their bakery opened up in 1987 and now produces over 10,000 pie crusts a year!
The bakery is open year round. We recommend picking up one of their signature apple pies, but they have a wide selection of baked goods on offer, including apple cider vinegar donuts and over 10 varieties of pies.
While you are in Peru, it's definitely worth checking out the Stone Ledge Sculpture Garden. It has a great variety of quirky sculptures on view, all made by local artists.
One major attraction in Peru—besides those great donuts of course–is the Adirondack Breathe Easy Salt Cave, which helps treat respiratory issues using ancient remedies—everything in the cave, other than the ceiling, is made using Himalayan salt.

If you like to eat pie and look at waterfalls—and who doesn’t—then a trip to Peru, New York and Rolfs Orchard is a must. It all makes for a charming little getaway in the northern part of New York. If you need a guide to more Northern New York destinations, we made a nice little list exactly for that. It might be quite the ride to Peru, so make sure you have all the essentials.
