SafeWise, an independent crime statistics review site, recently published its annual list of safest cities in each state. Overall, New York’s violent crime rate of 3.6 per 1,000 residents is lower than the national average. New York’s property crime rate went down this year to 13.7 per 1,000 residents, one of the lowest rates in the country. Typically, Safewise publishes a list of just 20 cities for each state, but New York had so many cities that met the criteria that 50 cities from the Empire State were included. Here are the top ten safest cities in New York for 2021:
Sleepy Hollow Village may be most famous for Washington Irving's story of the fearsome headless horseman, but this town of 10,000 has another accomplishment. This is one of the safest cities in New York, with no reported property crime or violent crime for the last year.
Kirkland Town has a population of just over 8,000. They have had no reported violent crime in over three years and last year's property crime rate was just .5 out of 1,000 residents.
The Town of Highlands, another regular member of this list, has a population of nearly 8,500. They have no reported violent crimes this year and their property crime rate is just .8 per 1,000 residents.
Northport Village has a population of just over 7,200. They have had no reported violent crimes for the last two years, and have a property crime rate of 1.0 out of 1,000 residents.
Rye's population of over 15,000 is high for this list, which makes it all the more impressive that their violent crime rate last year was just .1 out of every 1,000 residents and their property crime rate was 1.0 out of every 1,000 residents.
Mount Hope has a population of just under 7,000 residents and last year's crime rates were .2 out of every 1,000 residents for violent crime and .9 out of every 1,000 residents for property crime.
The town of Cornwall has a population of 9,500 and a violent crime rate of just .2 out of every 1,000 residents. Their property crime rate has fallen over the last few years and is now just .7 out of every 1,000 residents.
Malverne Village has a population of 8,500. Their violent crime rate has been .2 out of 1,000 residents for the last two years, and their property crime rate has steadily fallen to 1.2 out of every 1,000 residents.
