Those of you who keep up with Only In New York should remember that not too long ago we spoke about how one of our state’s amazing brewpubs was just recognize for its amazing craft beer. If you’re unable to make it out to the Finger Lakes though, don’t worry because this isn’t the only watering hole worth checking out in New York. Down in Rockland County, there’s a historic tavern that maintains colonial charm that you can’t find just anywhere nowadays. So, who’s ready for a trip back in time and some good drinks?
Located in the historic town of Tappan, The '76 House dates all the way back to 1668 and is a local treasure.
Creating a wonderful atmosphere that takes you back in time, the dining rooms feature fireplaces and other details that add to its character like the pewter plates that they use.
But one of the most fascinating things about this bar in particular is the fact that according to history, General George Washington stood at this very railing that you see today in The '76 House!
On the lunch menu you can find their popular burgers while their dinner menu features delicious steak and chops. The '76 House also offers other dishes like baked stuffed clams, applewood smoked trout, lobster mac and cheese that your taste buds will go crazy for.
With the gift of time and lots of love, this historical structure has gone from being a local tavern to a famous prison and then once again back to a favorite dining and drinking spot in town.
