You might not think the city of Buffalo has many parks you’d want to visit while on a road trip, but the city has several great spots on Lake Erie to stop and soak in the landscapes. One of them is Buffalo Harbor State Park, a multi-faceted park on the south side of downtown. It’s got great walking trails, a playground and easy access to beaches and other parks in the area, all within a short distance of downtown Buffalo.
The first state park in the city, Buffalo Harbor State Park is perfect day for anyone looking for an accessible green space with great views of Lake Erie.
The park also borders the Tifft Nature Preserve, a 264-acre preserve that is a popular birdwatching, hiking and snowshoeing destination. It was also designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audobon Society in 1968.
Buffalo Harbor State Park has a prime location next to several other great parks; once you’ve soaked in some great views of Lake Erie, head to Lakeside Bike Park or the Bell Slip, a sand barren preserve right next to the lake.
Visitors also have easy access to the Buffalo River; head downtown to Red Jacket River Front Park for a prime location by the river, right in the heart of the city.
If you’re willing to travel a few miles north along the coast, Outer Harbor Buffalo is one of the best parks in town where you can enjoy a beautiful natural environment and great views of the city.
If you’re looking to head into town to grab food and drinks after hitting Buffalo’s parks, try Adolf’s Old First Ward Tavern, Deep South Taco or Tappo Restaurant. That’s just the beginning of a long list of fantastic eateries in Buffalo.
