Montgomery Place is a stunning 19th-century historic estate in New York. The 380-acre property has several walking trails that offer beautiful views of the wooded area and nearby Catskills. The property and mansion are owned by Bard College, which allows public access to the grounds throughout the year from dawn to dusk. Montgomery Place in New York is one of the most interesting and well-preserved of all the Hudson Valley estates.

Approximately 5,000 years ago, Native Americans used this area as a seasonal hunting ground. Many historic artifacts have been uncovered on the property, and archaeological investigations continue at Montgomery Place in New York to this day.

The home was commissioned by Janet Livingston Montgomery, a wealthy widow. The house, which she named Chateau de Montgomery, was completed in 1805.

She lived in the estate and turned the property into a large working farm. The farm transferred hands several times and underwent a massive renovation in 1844. Famed architect Alexander Jackson Davis improved the landscaping and transformed the historic estate in New York into a more popular and classic style.
Today, the grounds of the home are a great option for visitors looking to enjoy the area's natural beauty. How phenomenal does this spot look for a picnic? I loved roaming around and taking a lot of Montgomery Place photos.

There are also several gardens on the property, in addition to numerous walking trails.
These views of the Hudson River are truly magnificent. The woods on the south portion of the property comprise the oldest oak forest in the Hudson Valley.

Unfortunately, there are no Montgomery Place tours of the inside available, but you can certainly explore the outside to your heart's content!
We loved roaming around outside the mansion. It was so quiet and peaceful. I imagine that it was just like this back on Janet Livingston Montgomery lived here.

Are there any other historic estates in New York?

Montgomery Place isn’t the only spot to see historic estates in New York:

Kykuit: Formerly the home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, this estate is located in Sleepy Hollow. Tour the Colonial Revival home, with different tour types available depending on how much time you have or how much of the house you want to see.

Vanderbilt Mansion: Located in Hyde Park, this Beaux Arts mansion was one of many homes owned by the wealthy railroad family. You can tour the 54-room home as well as take in its garden and other walking trails on the property. This house and its surrounding scenery are among my favorites here in New York.

What are the most unique towns in New York?

There are so many great towns to visit in the Empire State. Check out some of these unique New York towns:

Saranac Lake: Located within the Adirondack Mountain region, this town is home to tons of shopping and cultural options with galleries and museums. And you’ll have the beautiful lake as a backdrop, which you can enjoy swimming and boating on!

Watkins Glen: You’ll find this town within the Finger Lakes region. You have a lot of choices for adventure here, from taking in Seneca Lake and its scenery and swimming and boating opportunities to exploring the beautiful 778-acre Watkins Glen State Park.

Chimney Bluffs State Park: You’ll find this 597-acre park in Wolcott on Lake Ontario. Take in the unique rock formations and 150-foot spires along four miles of hiking trails. You can also fish and hunt here.

Robert H. Treman State Park: This 1,110-acre park is located in Ithaca. Take in the gorge and 12 waterfalls, like the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, via nine different hiking trails. You can also fish, swim, and camp here.
