As often as we see historic railroads shutting down and becoming a thing of the past here in New York State, it’s still no uncommon discovery to find yourself inside of a train station nowadays. Some train stations in our state provide the basics like a shelter for you as you wait to hop aboard the car, while others feature more enticing attractions that you’ll enjoy keeping yourself busy with. If train-related tropics happen to pique your interest though, then take the time to dive into the history of this one-of-a-kind train station in New York.
Hidden away underneath the New York Transit Museum, City Hall Station is a train station that's been closed since 1945.
Not many people realize that this historic station lives below the streets of New York, earning the title of being the first subway station in the city when it opened in 1904.
As magnificent as this glamorous train station was though, it quickly ended up being one of the least used platforms in all of New York and was closed down in 1945.
Today people can only get a look at the station if they're riding on the 6 train that passes by it, but during a couple times throughout the year something special happens.
Before you know it you'll head down to City Hall Station where you can witness all of the small, magical details that make up this one-of-a-kind station.
From the famous curved platforms and glass skylights to the vaulted arches and Guastavino tiles, you'll be at a loss for words as you take a tour of this station.
Here you can see one of the many reasons that this station found its demise. The station's famous curved platforms no longer allowed modern cars to stop here - requiring extra security between the platform and the car doorway for those who needed to board the train.
If you'd love to see this incredible train station for yourself - don't miss out because the next round of tickets to tour City Hall Station will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019.
Today, people can only get a good look at City Hall Station through the New York Transit Museum. The museum offers guided walking tours usually only several times a year, with the upcoming date the first to kick off the 2019 season. Because this tour is so unique and fascinating, it's needless to say that tickets tend to sell out fast - so keep that in mind!
