The Alps are in central Europe. The Irish live in Ireland. Everyone knows these things. Then what, you ask, are the Irish Alps?
That’s a great question. The Irish Alps are not in Europe; this region is in New York. The area including and around East Durham in the northern Catskills has been affectionately referred to as the Irish Alps for many years because it was once a popular vacation spot for Irish immigrants from New York City. Although today people of all nationalities and heritages vacation in this area, the name stuck. Today, you can celebrate Irish American heritage when you visit this beautiful, green and mountainous area. Read on to learn more.
East Durham is the center of the Irish Alps, but this name also extends to the smaller towns that surround it. As you can see, East Durham is quite proud of the fact that it is known as the "Emerald Isle of the Catskils."
The mountains that surround this area are quiet and beautiful. They're not as big as the Alps, but they're green and lovely in the spring and fall. The fall foliage in this region is beautiful, too.
You can stay in one of the still-operational Irish resorts, such as Gavin's Irish Country Inn in Cornwallville. There's a pool and all meals are included. Often, you can enjoy live entertainment at Gavin's.
The Blackthorn Resort is another Irish-themed property in East Durham. You and your family can enjoy the pool, playground, creek, basketball court, tennis courts, and more during your stay.
Jimmy O'Connor's Windham Mountain Inn in Windham is a small hotel with a traditional Irish pub. It's a great place to enjoy a Guinness or an Irish whiskey.
East Durham is a great place to visit if you want to enjoy a bit of Irish flavor without leaving New York! The Irish Alps are a great place to get away from it all and to spend a nice weekend in the mountains. Plan your trip today!
