Macy’s was founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy. Today, Macy’s has more than 500 stores. However, none is as big as the company’s flagship store in Manhattan. Not only is Macy’s Herald Square the largest department store in New York, but it’s one of the largest stores in the entire world. It takes up an entire city block, and people come from all over the world to visit it. Read on to learn more about this gigantic store.
Macy's Herald Square is located at the intersection of 34th Street, Broadway, and Sixth Avenue. It opened in this location in 1902 and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and was made a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
It claims to be the world's largest store, but that's debatable. There are a few contenders in Asia that may be larger, depending on what one includes in the measurements.
It is quite gigantic. The building covers an entire New York City block. Inside, Macy's takes up 2.5 million square feet; 1.25 million feet of that space is for retail space, and the rest is for offices. It's the chain's corporate headquarters in addition to being its largest store.
This store goes on and on. Imagine everything that's in your local Macy's, and then multiply that by ten or more. There are dozens of make-up counters.
Macy's Herald Square loves to decorate and many customers come at various times of the year just to enjoy them. Christmas is a big deal at Macy's; you'll find the store decorated inside and out and from top to bottom.
The Macy's Flower Show in the spring is also a spectacular event. Flowers are installed all over the store right at the exact time that they will bloom.
Of course, you probably already know that Macy's sponsors New York's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They've been doing so since 1924. The parade ends right outside of Macy's.
Have you been to Macy’s Herald Square? Were you impressed? This store is so large that you can get lost inside it for hours. Next time you’re in New York City, stop by and visit. Then you can say you’ve been to one of the largest stores in the world!
