Gray’s Papaya is one of the most iconic hot dog spots in all of New York City. Since 1973, it has provided cheap-yet-delicious dogs to the people of New York. It’s just one of those things that New Yorkers can rely on: You can always get a great hot dog—and drink—at Gray’s Papaya. It’s quite possibly the best hot dog in New York City. Want to know more? Sure you do! Keep reading, below.
Gray’s Papaya was founded by a former partner in the Papaya King franchise, Nicholas Grey. Though it used to be a chain, it is currently down to its flagship location, which is situated at 2090 Broadway at 72nd Street.
Gray’s is probably most famous for its affordable, amazing hot dogs. At one point they only cost 50 cents! Now, they come in at $2.95, which is still a screaming deal.
Then there are the tropical drinks, which is where the restaurant takes its name. You can choose between coconut, banana, pina colada, and, of course, papaya. We recommend "The Recession Special," which is one frank and a medium tropical drink for only $4.50.
The iconic restaurant has been used in many movies, including “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “Fools Rush In,” “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” and “The Back-Up Plan.”
The restaurant even delivers! They do nationwide shipping, in case you are a New Yorker who needs a taste of home. If you want to carry-out directly from the storefront, 12 franks will run you a very reasonable $30.
Whether you are a seasoned New Yorker or someone just visiting, Gray’s Papaya is a way to eat great, without hurting your pocketbook. It’s quite possibly the official dog of the city that never sleeps. While you are in The Big Apple, why not check out this secret, hidden rainforest? And, if you need a place to stay, we recommend Holiday Inn Express, Times Square.
