You know those little gadgets you always see paranormal investigators carrying around to check for suspicious activity and ghosts? Well, it would seem that pretty much the entire Western half of our state would have those sensors going completely bonkers. Though many areas throughout the Finger Lakes region have their own haunting stories that send shivers up our spines, it’s Buffalo that would appear to be the most haunted place in our eerie state. Wondering what made this city pop up on our radar?
Grab your favorite comfort item and turn on all the lights, it’s time to hear about these 7 truly terrifying ghost stories that prove Buffalo is the most haunted city in our state:
1. Buffalo Central Terminal
Out of operation since 1979, this terminal on our list is known to be one of the most haunted places in the area. While most people who experience strange activity here claim to only see innocent orbs, the story behind them is quite eerie. During World War II many men of the war would never come back to claim their baggage, it is these men who are said to haunt the halls of the central terminal.

2. Canisius College
The privately owned college of Western New York was founded in 1870 and is said to have some strange and supernatural noises occurring here! While other areas of the college have claimed to be haunted, the schools chapel is most active in spirits. Many who have taken a trip around Canisius College will tell you stories of strange voices coming from the confessionals, as well as spirits looming around the basement.
3. Buffalo State Asylum
Referred to by most as the H.H. Richardson Complex, this abandoned state asylum was home to many primitive psychiatric treatments during its up and running. Completed in the late 1800's, unfortunately the knowledge of mental health issues was nowhere near where it is today. Performing lobotomies, sterilizations, and many other unorthodox practices on patients is what many believe, fueled the paranormal fire. Closed to the public, this now empty asylum remains still with the chatter of former patients and spirits inside its halls.
4. Shea's Performing Arts Center
Opening in 1926, the owner Michael Shea was reportedly over the moon for the beautiful theater. It would be only ten years later when Mr. Shea would pass away, supposedly never truly leaving Shea's Performing Arts Center. It has been claimed by many that the ghost of Mr. Shea still remains at the theater, often making friendly comments to people or doing minor things like moving his portrait and flashing lights. Most people have an understanding that the spirit of Shea was too fond of the theater to ever leave, recognizing that the presence they feel is here to do them no harm.
5. Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park
After five brothers were killed by a Japanese torpedo while onboard a WW2 ship, their spirits were said to have haunted this naval park. Docked at this park you'll find the USS The Sullivans, where the brothers spirits reportedly stay and watch over the visitors. Many who have visited these ships also theorize that the presences you're feeling are those of previous crew members who don't mean to bother you!
6. St. Mary's School for the Deaf
Created in the mid 1800's, this New York school has now become filled with several unsettling spirits! From a group of nuns that haunt the third floor and move around a large bell, to the upsetting stories of a boy who drowned in a pool that has now been turned into a gym. Yikes!
7. The Iron Island Museum
Built in the late 1800's and once serving as not only a church but also a funeral home, this Buffalo museum is packed with fascinating history and also plenty of spirits! Offering public ghost hunts, haunted history tours, and private investigations, plenty of spirits have been detected here at the museum. From unusual voices being heard to strange photos and videos, this place sure does seem a bit creepy..
