To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
All throughout the Catskill region, you can find the remains of hotels and resorts that were once booming. Specifically, during the 1950s, the area was populated with incredible vacation destinations that were even luxurious enough to draw in handfuls of celebrities. You may have already seen us talking about decaying places that are similar to this in the area, but now it’s time to talk about the most famous getaway of them all.

Right within the town of Liberty in Sullivan County, Grossinger's Resort was unlike anything New York had ever seen.
Now left to crumble away with time and overridden by nature, the hotel originally opened back in the early 1900s by Austrian immigrants Asher and Malke Grossinger.
After the couple's daughter Jennie took over, the resort quickly became booming with business and was long considered to be the Crown Jewel of the Catskills.
Another feature of the resort that has now become well-known is the natatorium. Urban explorers now gather inside this spacious room to witness a unique urban greenhouse.
All throughout the year you can find greenery covering the inside of the room, with ivy and moss thriving vibrantly in this deserted corner of Grossinger's.
Sadly, once Jennie Grossinger passed away in 1972, the resort continued to decline and would break the hearts of many in 1986 when it closed its doors forever.
With many of the buildings on the property now gone and urban explorers having picked through what was left behind here, the once loved resort is now a sad sight to see.
Where New Yorkers from all over the state use to once relax by the pool to get away from it all, now lies a wasted space that we wish we could bring back to life.
Unfortunately, the buyers would come to realize that it was going to cost too much to give this place the face lift that it needed, eventually abandoning the property altogether.
What was said to be the inspiration for Dirty Dancing, Grossinger's was the locatoin of Eddie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor's wedding and was even the residence of Jackie Robinson at one point in time!
