It never hurts to have a great burger guide when you’re touring a new state. But when you’re making your way through the culinary riches possessed by the Empire State, it’s an absolute must. New York doesn’t shy away from experimenting with new flavors and ideas, whether its breakfast burgers or patties topped with pork belly. In the end, everyone’s taste buds benefit. Here are a few of our favorite burger joints all across the state:
The Colonial doesn't hold back when it comes to burger choices; they've got eight just on the lunch menu. If you've never tried a PB & J burger, this highly-rated spot in Binghampton is the place to do it. They've got delicious vegetarian options, and then there's the beer cheese burger. Dive in at your own risk.
Schatzi's Pub and Bier Garden sits in the middle of the Union Street Historic District, just a few blocks from the Hudson River. Try these Schatzi's Burger, which is a blend of chuck and short rib topped with pork belly. Or go all-in with the tastiest (and probably the first) mac-and-cheese burger you've ever had.
This iconic drive-in burger joint has been a Rochester staple for over 60 years. Try one of their classic cheeseburgers, and you'll see why. They've also got a huge selection of fries, milkshakes, and other tasty sides.
Head to Crave in Albany for some of the most mouth-watering burgers in the state. We recommend The Southerner: A beef patty, fried green tomatoes, smoked bacon, pimento cheese, lettuce, buttermilk ranch. Need we say more?
You'll find another loaded burger lineup at the Modern Malt, where, if you're brave enough, the Rise and Shine Burger is waiting for you with a fried egg, New York cheddar, and amber bacon jam. Talk about a wake-up call.
Schenectady is one of the best food towns in New York, and you'll find no shortage of great burgers there, too. Head to 20 North Broadway Tavern and dig into the Allman Burger, a house favorite packed with cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce, and onion rings.
Lots of restaurants have burgers; not many have a "Burger Brunch." Go ahead and count The Ithaca Ale House as one of the few that does. If you've never tried a Waffle Burger, now's the time.
These are far from the only great destinations for great burgers in the state; Allen Burger Venture in Buffalo is a hugely popular spot, as is Comfort Kitchen in Saratoga Springs. Head down to New York City, and there will be too many good burgers to count (but we recommend starting with J.G. Melon on the Upper East Side).
