The Grant Cottage State Historic Site is where President U.S. Grant spent his final days and died on July 23, 1885—moving into the cottage with friends, family, and physicians roughly 6-weeks before his passing.
Today, history buffs and hidden gem chasers of New York make their way to the historic Victorian-style cottage to see Grant's well-preserved final home and to also enjoy something else... the views!
Visitors generally first like to enjoy a guided tour of the cottage, which they then follow up with the short but sweet stroll on over to the Eastern Overlook.
Also known as "Grant's Last View", once you reach the overlook you'll see a memorial that's been placed in the exact spot where President Grant enjoyed his final day during the summer of 1885.
You'll be able to see as far away as 50 miles on a clear day, with views of the Adirondack Mountains, Green Mountains of Vermont, Catskill Mountains, and our scenic Hudson Valley—often drawing out artists who come here to paint these unforgettable landscapes.
