Visiting New York during the fall season is something people from all over the country come to do, hoping to time their trips perfectly to get the chance to see our amazing foliage. Unfortunately, you might remember that last year Mother Nature’s plan was a bit different than what we were hoping for.
If you’re unaware, the main environmental factors that give our leaves the exciting pops of the color that we love to see include rain, short nights, and cool temperatures. So when last fall rolled around and we were still experiencing very hot, dry days with high temperatures, it resulted in quite the fast-peaking, dull foliage. Due to make a stronger comeback, find out when New York’s foliage will be peaking this year!
While no one can 100% guarantee what America's fall foliage will be like, the Smoky Mountains
creates an annual map that does a pretty spectacular job of predicting when and where the leaves will begin to peak.
If you look at the Smoky Mountains interactive map you'll be able to see when the foliage will hit all areas of the country between August 27th and November 19th.
According to the map, minimal foliage is expected to hit almost all of New York starting as early as September 10th, excluding areas like our westernmost corner and everything below the Northern Catskills region.
If you continue to scroll through the map you'll see that most of New York state is expected to reach peak foliage on October 8th, with the rest of the state in our Western and Southern regions hitting their full peak on October 15th.
With most of the state reaching peak foliage a full two weeks later than last year, we can expect to see gorgeous colors this fall and we couldn't be more excited!
Are you excited to hear that we're due to have more vibrant foliage this year compared to last year's muted colors? To view the interactive map created by Smoky Mountains, click here.
