We’ve already told you about some of the best museums around the state of New York that won’t cost you a dime to enter and explore, but there’s one little-known museum that’s worth every penny to get into. One of the only museums like its kind on the entire planet, prepare to be completely fascinated by everything that you’ll learn about here at this one underrated museum out within in our Southern Tier.
It may have been a while since you made the trip out to New York's small city of Elmira, but if there's one reason to motivate you to head out this way - it's the National Soaring Museum.
Featuring one of the largest collections of historical and vintage gliders and sailplanes on the planet, the museum is only one of two in the country that's dedicated to motorless flight.
From the floor to the ceilings up above you, you'll find a fascinating array of gliders and sailplanes that are on display here and will quickly catch your eye.
The museum houses soaring trophies, related photography, and other vintage memorabilia that all play their intriguing part in preserving the history of motorless flight.
Something that's also exciting to keep in mind? During the spring, summer, and fall, as long as weather permits, right on the historic campus at Harris Hill you can go for 20-minute sailplane rides over the Chemung Valley that will leave you nothing short of speechless.
