For those on Long Island—or the general New York City area—there is a beautiful walking trail that is fun, no matter what the season. We are talking about the Manorville Hills County Park Walking Trail, which is perfect for both a relaxed, marathon walking session, or something a little bit shorter. It might just be the best park for walking on Long Island. To learn more, keep reading, below.
In totality, Manorville Hills County Park Walking Trail is a 7.7 mile loop trail close to Manorville, New York, in the Long Island Central Pine Barrens. It is situated on 6,000 acres of land that is owned by Suffolk County and NYS DEC. Previously, parts of Manorville Hills have been used for a smattering of small farms.
The trail is considered by most to be a somewhat challenging route, and takes around three hours to complete. The terrain can be a bit rough—the region was, after all, established by the Wisconsin Stage Pleistocene glaciers.
If hikers don’t feel like doing the full 7.7 mile loop, there are plenty of locations that allow visitors to shorten the loop. There is something for all abilities and comfort levels here.
Though the trail is a fairly popular destination for hiking and running, visitors can still find decent amounts of space in the park during less busy times in the day.
Hikers can enter the park on the east side of Captain Daniel Roe Highway (County Route 111), which sits in the middle of the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway. The parking lot is less than a mile away from the road. From there, visitors can choose from trails for hikers, horseback riders, and bikers.
For those with dogs—bring them along! The trail is pet-friendly, just make sure to bring a leash along. It’s important to be mindful that there is a major tick problem on these trails, especially the further hikers go into the woods, and especially in the summer.
No matter what the temperature, a long hike is a great way to get the blood pumping and enjoy nature, so check out Manorville Hills County Park Walking Trail this winter—or spring, or summer, or fall. While exploring this great park for walking on Long Island, why not dine at Anchor Down, a great seafood restaurant. And for those looking for a place to stay around Manorville, we recommend Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Saugerties, which is less than five miles from the town.
