Depending on how long you’ve been a reader here at Only In New York, you’ve most likely read about noteworthy attractions like Whiteface Memorial Highway – the highest paved road in all of New York State or landmarks like the tallest bridge in our state AKA the Verrazzano Bridge that you can find downstate. While your initial thought may be to explore all around aboveground in the Empire State, if you’re brave enough to head beneath the earth’s surface, you can find some truly amazing and one-of-a-kind attractions that are worth your attention! If you’re ready to make your way to one of our state’s deepest destinations then be sure to check out how you can now officially go for a tour of our area’s deepest boat ride.
Bringing you out to the often underrated Schoharie County, Howe Caverns is one of the most unique natural attractions that you'll ever get the chance to explore here in New York State.
Amidst the rolling hills and beautiful countryside you will see a giant message on the lawn indicating that you have arrived. There is plenty to see topside but it's what is waiting for you under the Earth's crust that has us intrigued.
Upon entering Howe Caverns, before you officially head underground, you'll find a whole map that will show you exactly what's laid out beneath the earth's surface and waiting for you during this adventure.
For those who are unfamiliar with Howe Caverns and the history of this unique underground space in the Empire State, Howe Caverns was first discovered and explored back in 1842 - on May 22nd to be exact, after local farmer Lester Howe began taking note that his cows were repeatedly making their way towards a dark opening in the ground!
You can get tickets for multiple types of tours whenever you visit the cave. Take the traditional tour which will be a guided tour learning the history and finishing with a boat ride. There are other more adventurous tours which involve some serious spelunking, then they run events throughout the year like lantern tours and escape rooms.
The times and dates will vary for each tour you take so make sure to check ahead with the link below taking you directly to the website.
That's right, lasting roughly 90 minutes long, you'll make your way through an extensive underground cave system that will also take you out onto an underground body of water - Lake Venus!
The traditional tour will feature many rock formations, a lit-up heart made of stone, and everyone's favorite section at the end. There is a narrow rock section that will have you weaving in and out of tight hallways, which is a blast for the whole family.
