Kaaterskill Falls is one of the most beautiful, exceptional, and unique waterfalls in the Catskills. It’s no surprise that people come from all over the state, the nation, and even the world to view it. However, it’s also a very dangerous place in New York and anyone who does visit it should take great care to keep themselves safe. Read on to learn more about this natural wonder and to learn what makes it so dangerous.
Kaaterskill Falls is breathtaking. This waterfall is part of Spruce Creek in the eastern Catskill Mountains.
It's actually a two-tier waterfall, which makes it even more special. In total, it's 260 feet from the top to the bottom. It is one of the tallest waterfalls in New York and in the eastern United States.
There are designated trails near the falls so that people can view and enjoy them. However, many visitors step off the trails to explore this area further. This can be extremely dangerous.
In fact, since 1992, at least eight people have died at Kaaterskill Falls. Some have slipped on the damp rocks at the edge of the cliffs and have fallen to their deaths.
These deaths are tragic. The New York Department of Conservation has made great efforts to mark the trails, make them safer, and to keep people on them. Unfortunately, there are always people who think that the safety rules don't apply to them. This attitude can be deadly.
Don't be discouraged from visiting Kaaterskill Falls, though! This waterfall is beautiful and you will love it. Wear proper hiking footwear. Don't hike near the falls when it's icy and avoid walking in the water even when it's not. Hike with a friend. Don't take any unnecessary risks. Stay on the trail.
