The Finger Lakes may be a region that’s known for having plenty of waterfalls and wine, but something our residents also always have nearby when they live out this way is a good ice cream spot. As delicious as some of these places can be, not all of them make their own desserts from scratch and have that extra wow factor to leave them really standing out from the rest.
Giving you a deliciously true taste of New York, this one little creamery in Yates County has so many lovable features that you won’t forget. See for yourself!
Out near the western shores of Seneca Lake but still technically part of Penn Yan, Spotted Duck is a small town creamery off of State Route 54.
The answer to why the frozen custard here is so smooth and creamy (and of course the inspiration behind the business's name), Spotted Duck uses eggs from their own Ancona ducks that live here on the property!
Aside from using the eggs that are produced from their own flock, Spotted Duck also locally sources things like the strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, wine, wine sauces, milk, dog biscuits, and other items that they use.
But with so many delicious homemade flavors on the menu, it often feels like the world's most impossible task to choose just one. That's where the next two menu items come in handy.
The first of the two useful options you'll have in front of you, The Hollywood allows you to pick four of any flavor AKA giving you your own little ice cream buffet.
But if you really want to indulge in your own ice cream buffet, it's best you go with the Full House - where you'll get twelve different flavors all right in front of you at once.
The delicious greatness continues at Spotted Duck when you step outside their ice cream flights and get back to the classics and favorites that are served here.
As if this menu wasn't already sounding delicious enough, Spotted Duck makes their own cookies that they sell or you can opt to take things a step further and get a cookie sandwich - where you'll have flavorful ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies.
When it comes to flavors, those locally sourced ingredients really stand out with options like their Strawberry Rhubarb, Seneca Salted Caramel, Wicked Chocolate, and Elderberry Port Reserve.
Another reason to finally visit Spotted Duck this year? They've just added an extension to their stand that offers more shaded areas to eat your ice cream and places to sit under twinkling lights.
So spend some time getting to know the amazing Ancona ducks while you eat some of the best-tasting frozen custard that you've ever had because there's nothing better than a summer that includes Penn Yan's Spotted Duck.
Thanks to the Hoover family, those of our residents who live in or around Yates County have some of the most delicious frozen custard available to them that they'll ever taste. Did we also forget to mention that they have Wine Trail Sundaes that are made up of amazing ice cream flavors and wine sauces that will remind you in the best way that you're out in the Finger Lakes. Open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the only day you won't be able to have your mind blown at Spotted Duck is on Sundays!
