You may feel like you’re quite the expert on the Empire State, but have you ever explored New York by train? Traveling by train is such a fun, nostalgic experience. The trip itself is half the fun: you’re better able to see the beautiful scenery when you’re not in the driver’s seat.As an added bonus: there’s no need to fill up on gas or worry about a flat tire, either! There are several railroads in New York that allow you to ride in style while not having to worry about a thing. One such rail line is the Charlotte Valley and Cooperstown Railroad.
Trains depart from Milford, just south of Cooperstown. The crew is all volunteers, so everyone is very passionate about railroads and providing you with the best trip possible.
The trips offered vary throughout the year. They typically offer holiday specials like the North Pole Express at Christmas and the Pumpkin Patch trains in the fall.
The 1.5-hour experience features train bandits attempting to steal the train's loot and the sheriff's gang fighting them off. It's a great ride that's fantastic for the whole family.
These vintage rail cars were built in the 19th century. Railroads were such an important part of the Empire State's rise to prominence, and it's incredible to think about this history as you ride aboard the train today.
