Nothing soothes the soul quite like a walk through nature, and on a beautiful day, this spot is the perfect place to be to take it all in! Take a trip south of the city to see exactly what we mean. Most people have no idea this unique sanctuary right outside of Buffalo even exists… until now!
The Anna Mae Bacon Bird Sanctuary is located in Hamburg along a bend of 18 Mile Creek.
The land was once used as a Victory Garden during World War II. Rumor has it that if you look hard enough, you can still see remnants of the farming to this day.

Anna Mae Bacon and her husband owned a part of the property where the sanctuary is now located.
Dubbed as "The Bird Lady of Hamburg," Mrs. Bacon was known to rehabilitate birds and bring them back to health. She also enjoyed planting species of plants known to attract birds to the area.

The area was restored in 2007 and became the beautiful, unique sanctuary near Buffalo that it is today.
All sorts of animals can be found within the trees and meadows of the sanctuary. The most popular, of course, are the birds. We highly recommend bringing your camera along for your trip to this relaxing spot!
You can find several unique species here, from migratory birds passing through to nesting species that call the sanctuary home.
While the birding is obviously great here, the scenery that will surround you at this sanctuary is amazingly beautiful, too! Several species of wildflowers can be spotted along the meadows and under the towering mature trees on the property.
You can find the Anna Mae Bacon Bird Sanctuary near the corner of Main Street and South Buffalo Street near the round-about: 1-85 NY-391, Hamburg.
