If you take a look around Buffalo, you can find all sorts of exciting pieces of history that will leave you feeling nothing short of fascinating. One thing that you can’t find inside of the Queen City though? One of New York’s many historic covered bridges. A charming piece of our state’s past, while many of these historic works of architecture haven’t been able to survive through modern times, you’ll still find plenty of them up and standing that you can pay a visit to. Giving you the perfect excuse to take a scenic drive out of the city, it’s time to uncover what’s truly unique about the oldest covered bridge that you can find outside of Buffalo. Take a look!
Just over 150 miles east of Buffalo, the Newfield Covered Bridge is a historic gem of New York State that you'll want to get a look at for yourself.
...the Newfield Covered Bridge of Tompkins County actually happens to be the oldest covered bridge in New York to still carry motor vehicle traffic. Woah!
That's not all though, if you take the time to pull over after driving across the Newfield Covered Bridge, you'll find a series of staircases that will lead you down to overlooks around and under the bridge — offering views of small waterfalls and the West Branch Cayuga Inlet.
At 115-feet long and 16-feet wide, over the years the bridge has been reconstructed to replace old timber, but the Newfield Covered Bridge's charm still looks the same as it did back in the 1850s.
