Buffalo’s restaurant scene is booming with creative new culinary options. While specialty dishes are certainly delicious, sometimes simple is still best. The next time you find yourself wondering where to venture on your lunch break, consider hitting up one of these delicious Buffalo sandwich shops!
1. BreadHive Bakery (402 Connecticut Street)
If you want freshly made bread wrapped around your favorite fillings, look no further than BreadHive! This worker cooperative bakery specializes in sourdough, bread, bagels, and pretzels - and offers up several sandwich options for your tasting pleasure.
2. Fables Cafe (1 Lafayette Square)
Fables Cafe is tucked away inside the Buffalo Public Central Library. Walk up to the counter and place your order, then find a good book to sit and read while you eat! Their sandwiches are delicious (think brie, apple, and bacon grilled cheese) and most even come with a fresh salad and a soft cookie for dessert!
3. Globe Market (two locations)
Globe has two locations: Elmwood if you feel like eating in or Globe Market To Go on Hertel for when you're in a rush. Either spot has amazing specialty sandwiches and wraps, like the Caprese sandwich: fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil with balsamic dressing on ciabatta bread. YUM.
4. The Lunch Box (three locations)
The Lunch Box is another no-brainer for Buffalo lunch. They offer pre-made salads for when you're in a hurry, but we recommend ordering a sammy from the menu if you have time! Whether you like it hot (grilled) or cold (deli style), The Lunch Box can do no wrong!
5. Nickel City Cheese & Mercantile (346 Connecticut Street)
What's a sandwich without cheese? Nickel City Cheese & Mercantile is a cheese shop at first glance, but upon further examination, it's also one of Buffalo's best sandwich shops. They serve sandwiches and panini with gooey goodness inside. Sink your tastebuds into one for lunch, and be sure to bring some of their specialty foods back home with you for later!
6. Public Espresso To Go (Larkin Square)
Want to sit and enjoy your sandwich on a sunny day? Venture over to Larkin Square and look for the shiny Airstream! This new spin (or lack thereof) of a food truck is different in that it always stays put: serving up delicious Public coffee and espresso, toast (featuring BreadHive sourdough!), bagels, and - you guessed it - yummy sandwiches.
7. Sweet_ness 7 Cafe (220 Grant Street)
Sweet_ness 7 is a great spot morning, noon, and night - with a delicious menu and drinks to match. Their sandwiches are available Monday through Saturday starting at 11AM and Sundays after 1 (because brunch), and they're well worth slotting into your weekly lunch schedule. Sweet_ness offers up all the classics: grilled cheese, BLT, ham and cheese, etc., on locally made sliced breads or an English muffin with a fresh side salad.
8. Expo Market (617 Main Street)
Expo is a local food hall with five restaurants offering up full menus. Whether you're jonesing for a fresh sandwich, delicious salad, wrap, or hot meal, Expo is the place to be! Just be warned: you probably won't want to head back into the office after your lunch break. There's also a full bar on site!
9. Buffalo Melting Point (244 Allen Street)
Craving all the grilled cheese all the time? Same. Buffalo Melting Point has the best grilled cheese in the city and they serve a whole lot of it. Order up from their specialty menu and thank us later!
Which of these Buffalo sandwich shops gets your vote for #1? And, more importantly, who wants to meet for lunch later?
