Western New Yorkers are a tough bunch. It takes a lot to make us nervous – especially when it comes to weather forecasts. When other areas tend to hype up winter weather, we quietly prepare to brave the elements. Here are 8 extreme weather terms that don’t scare Buffalonians – even though some of them sound downright terrifying!
1. Blizzard
This seems like a good place to start. The word "blizzard" is enough to literally send chills down the spine of more fairweather folks, but Buffalonians don't even flinch at this phrase in the forecast. There have only been a handful of times that blizzard-like conditions have knocked us down a peg.
2. Bomb Cyclone
This is one of the latest weather phrases to hit the news outlets. While it sounds scary, Buffalonians didn't allow ourselves to get up in a tizzy about the term. While we feel for our friends along the East Coast, we're glad this one didn't hit us too hard!
3. Polar Vortex
Remember when this one hit the airwaves and it sounded so incredibly intense? Now, the term "polar vortex" is used loosely (and sometimes inaccurately) to describe frigid temperatures. It's almost commonplace in Buffalo... therefore not scary.
4. Lake Effect
"The Lake Effect Machine" starts up on Lake Erie more often than we'd like most winters, but that just means we have plenty of opportunities to get toughened up! This term isn't scary to Buffalonians. Actually, we sometimes love the thrill of a lake effect snow storm on the horizon.
5. Code Blue
Code Blue is nothing to take lightly. In fact, it can be extremely dangerous and sometimes even deadly - both of which are very scary things. While most Buffalonians aren't necessarily afraid of plunging temperatures, many people who aren't quite so fortunate to have warm homes can indeed get a bit bothered by this term. Luckily, The City Of Good Neighbors always comes through with warm, hand-knit items on plenty of trees downtown and warming shelters for the homeless to take refuge in during the night.
6. Wintry Mix
Several Buffalonians cringe at the phrase "wintry mix," especially because it tends to come into play most often at the end of long, harsh winters when all we want is a warm up. Although this term is obnoxious, the thought of freezing rain and slush is not scary in the least to Buffalonians.
7. Thundersnow
Is there anything more exciting than a thundersnow storm? We've experienced this phenomenon several times in Buffalo, and it's more thrilling than scary every time!
8. Wind Chill
Wind chill, sometimes referred to as "real feel," can get bitterly cold in Buffalo. While we don't always prefer the temperatures to feel like they're in the negatives, it's not scary to deal with. Rather than get freaked out by the freezing weather, Buffalonians simply bundle up!
