If you’re passing through the Rochester area and looking for a local spot to relax and grab a drink, head to Black Button Distilling, one of the most unique distilleries you’ll find in New York. Almost all of the ingredients the distillery uses are from New York. And once you’re there, a stellar lineup of high-quality whiskeys, gins and more will make enthusiasts want to spend the day at this one-of-a-kind distillery.
Black Button Distilling is one of the most unique places in upstate New York to grab a drink this winter. Locally-sourced spirits, great tasting experiences and the distillery’s “library” make it one of the most fun destinations in the Rochester area.
Book a trip to one of their tastings and enjoy the outdoor patio and firepits while you sip on some top-notch spirits. The distillery is also offering curbside pickup.
The distillery was founded by Jason Barrett, who named the distillery Black Button in honor of his family, which had been in the business of men’s suit buttons for four generations, since 1922.
Barret started the distillery at the age of 24 after quitting his job and moving home to Rochester to start the city’s first “grain to glass” distillery since Prohibition.
The corn, wheat and rye used in the distillery’s products are sourced from a 1,600-acre farm south of Rochester called Edgewood Farms in Groveland. Black Button also uses 90 percent New York ingredients in all of its spirits.
The distillers even acquired a 19-acre farm in the Finger Lakes region in 2018 in order to grow juniper, white oak for bourbon barrels, and other herbs and spices.
You can also buy a variety of the distillery’s unique products online, including Port Finished Bourbon, Empire Rye Whiskey and Loganberry Gin, to name a few.
You can even book a visit to Black Button Distilling’s library of rare spirits, try a variety of unique flights and learn how to blend your own spirits. And don’t leave the distillery without trying their delicious a la carte items like cheesecake, chocolates and meat and cheese plates.
The distillery is located in the heart of Rochester, so a day at Black Button means you’re within a few minutes of a ton of great restaurants. Try French restaurant Cure, Nosh or Morningstar Greek American.
