John Williams is a writer based in New York City. He's been living in the state for over a decade. He loves nothing more than checking out some great regional cuisine and then taking a long walk in the park.
Though the village of Barker—located in Niagara County, New York, inside of the town of Somerset, which has a population of less than 3,000—has under a 1,000 residents, it is home to the beautiful Golden Hill State Park. Great for a few hours or a few days, Golden Hill State Park has a variety of activities for all-ages to enjoy. And, if you ever wanted to stay the night in an old-fashioned lighthouse, you can do that at Golden Hill. It’s the best state park in Barker, NY.
Obtained by the state of New York in 1962, the park is home to the Thirty Mile Lighthouse, which was decommissioned by the Coast Guard in 1958. Initially, the lighthouse had family quarters for keepers and assistant keepers. Those very quarters can now be rented out for what would surely be a very memorable overnight stay.
The lighthouse comes loaded with all the modern features you would want from a hotel, and features three bedrooms with queen size beds and pillows. If you want to rough it, you can also camp on the grounds.
The state park allows for camping, biking, boating, fishing, hiking, disc golf, and many more activities. There are plenty of great summer events at the park, and in the winter you can go snowmobiling and snowshoeing.
The Golden Hill State Park also has yurts for rental. Framed using wood lattice, yurts feature fabric sides, insulated liners, a doomed roof and wood floors. They come with two sets of bunk beds and a futon that can be converted to a bed, and can sleep up to six people.
Golden Hill State Park is located right on Lake Ontario, providing great views throughout the park—especially if you end up spending the night in the lighthouse.
If you want a great under-the-radar state park experience in New York, Golden Hill State Park is the perfect choice—it is fitting for both a day trip or a longer stay, and is definitely the best state park in Barker, NY. While you are in the area, it might be worth considering taking the short trip over to Binghamton, where the secret speakeasy 205 Dry is pouring 1920s-themed drinks inside of a bar that is only accessible from a secret passageway located in a bookstore.
