It’s no secret that when you’re living in New York, at some point or another you’ll endure some cringe-worthy moments. Some of these uncomfortable situations may be completely out of your control, but eventually you’ll learn to ride the waves and deal with these things as they come. Usually leaving you in a bit of a pickle, this list contains awkward moments that all of us have experienced at least once.
1. Posting a picture after you've gone on a secret adventure and then having someone ask where it is you were.
Secret spots are the best spots! So when we do add a geotag to our uploaded picture, it's because we don't want you knowing where it is we were. Try and try all you may, but we probably won't spill the beans on where we spent the day exploring.
2. Claiming that you're from Upstate New York even though you're not, all while you happen to be in conversation with someone who's actually from Upstate.
Due to the fact that everyone in our state seems to have their own opinion over what Upstate New York actually is, confusion frequently arises over areas of this topic. One of the most cringeworthy things to witness is when a resident claims that they're from Upstate when they're not, only to be quickly corrected by someone who truly lives in the area.
3. Receiving disappointing looks from people who find out you just live in the state of New York and not New York City.
Anytime someone asks us where we're from and they hear New York as the response, they automatically assume we mean the Big Apple. No matter where it is we're traveling, these strangers are always hoping we're some exotic lively resident from New York City. But like we always say, there's so much more to the Empire State!
4. Watching the look of shock roll over someone's face when they find out you've never visited Niagara Falls.
Easily New York's most famous waterfall, not all of our residents are willing or want to make the drive out to America's side of Niagara Falls. So even though this famously known natural wonder attracts visitors from all over the world, not all of us have made the trip out there even though we've been living in New York our entire lives.
5. And speaking out up near the border, not all of our residents live near Canada.
A question many of us are often asked, out-of-town friends seems to always want to know how close we live to Canada. But it frequently becomes an awkward situation once we remind them of how large New York is that and not everyone lives out that way.
6. Watching someone who's not from the area completely butcher the pronunciation of a New York location.
Whether it be a town name or street, there's lots of locations in New York that are a bit of a tongue twister. And while it'd be easy enough to just tell the person how to pronounce the place, it's more fun to watch them try to figure it out for themselves.
7. Thinking you love someone only to find out that they're rooting for all the wrong teams. Ahem, New England, ahem.
There's nothing worse than someone showing up sporting a Boston Red Sox shirt, or really any New England team merchandise. Living in this state means you are almost certainly raised to love the Yankees and all of our other teams, knowing that the Red Sox and New England Patriots are teams you should never be rooting for!
8. Witnessing strange outfits like Ugg boots with shorts because New York's weather can't make up its mind.
One of the only states where you can find yourself experiencing all four seasons in one day, dressing for the weather can be a bit tricky in New York. Changing throughout the day, the unpredictable weather can end up leading to unusual outfits that we wish we'd never had to of witnessed.
9. Ordering pizza outside of our state and then realizing that nobody else knows how to make the perfect pie.
There's a laundry list of food that New York makes better than anywhere else, period. All over the state you can find delicious pizza shops that know how to turn hungry visitors into loyal customers. We do pizza the best!
10. Spending the holidays out of state and seeing how awkward Christmas decorations look without any snow.
The holidays are meant to be experienced during weather and scenery that resembles the magical world of Narnia and such, not your ultimate green and vibrant vacation!
11. Leaving your car windows open during the summer, only for an unexpected rain shower to appear that turns your car into a shallow kiddie pool.
Both awkward and upsetting, it's no joyous feeling to look out your window at the pouring rain and remember that you left the windows in your car open. But thankfully because New York's weather is so wacky, we almost always have a spare hoodie in the back of a car to lay down on our seat to help soak up the moisture.
12. Burning yourself on your seat belt during our summer months.
No matter how long we've lived in New York, there's always comes that moment where you forget that this small piece of metal has been sitting in the sun turning into the perfect little weapon. Making you shout out in pain, the awkward mistake is one that will forever be made
13. Complaining about how hot it is and then being reminded that we were just begging for summer to arrive moments ago.
We're all guilty of it. We spend a considerable amount of time in the winter pleading for summer to show up early, only to then complain about how hot things get once summer finally does arrive!
14. Dealing with people looking at you like you're a crazy person while you're trying to test out Lake George's Mystery Spot for yourself.
Stand at this one particular spot in town and you'll discover that your voice sounds as though it's entered a tunnel. An unexplained phenomenon that you can only hear for yourself, those passing by who don't know about the mystery spot will think you're simply shouting for no reason like a lunatic. 15. Hearing an out-of-town friend try to figure out why it is they're somehow smelling Cheerios.
If you aren't from the Buffalo area or know that the General Mills factory is here in the area, you'd be quite confused once you began to smell Cheerios in the air. When we see this happen the next step is to decide whether you want to explain to them why they're smelling Cheerios or just let the out-of-towner think they're crazy for smelling this classic cereal.
