With Thanksgiving behind us, it’s time to start planning your winter adventures in one of the most magical regions in the Northeast: upstate New York. From skiing to snowshoeing, great winter dining and endless trails, there’s something for everyone in the winter wonderland that is the Adirondacks. Here are a few destinations guaranteed to deliver as much fun as you can handle.
Whiteface Mountain is getting ready to open for the season, and the snowmaking process is underway. It’s one of the best mountains in New York to ring in the skiing season with your family. What better mountain to visit than the highest lift-serviced peak in the Northeast?
Whiteface Mountain also played host to the 1980 Olympic Games and has some of the best runs in the state.
One of the advantages of traveling to Dynamite Hill Recreation Area is the diverse array of activities that it offers; hiking, cycling, snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding and ice skating are just a few of the popular activities visitors can enjoy at Dynamite Hill.
The 30-foot Lake Placid Tobbogan Chute is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have in the Adirondacks. Hop on a toboggan and glide down the chute on the frozen Mirror Lake. If you think this is just for kids, think again! Tobogganers sometimes slide up to 1,000 feet after reaching the base of the lake.
This winter wonderland just west of the Adirondack Mountains contains 1.2 million acres of land, with a high point of more than 2,000 feet. Head to the Tug Hill region and you’ll find dozens of miles of horse trails, great camping spots, the Beaver River Canoe Route (a popular area for paddling) and Lake Bonaparte, which has 24 miles of shoreline.
If you’re thinking about planning a trip to Oak Mountain this winter, you’re headed in the right direction. In addition to great skiing, there are some stellar accommodations in the area, from the Bearhurst Lakeside Cottages to the Irondequoit Inn.
Plus you’ll have access to free snowshoeing at Oak Mountain.
Another couple great mountains to hit this winter are Gore Mountain Ski Resort and Snow Ridge Ski Resort. If you’re looking for some cozy accommodations, check out Lake Pleasant Lodge or the cozy Inn at Speculator.
