While the Land of Enchantment is full to the brim with many natural wonders, this park just west of Carrizozo is home to lava beds that were left behind after a volcano erupted over 5,000 years ago. From far away, the park looks desolate, but when you get up close and out on the trails you’ll see six miles of lava flow throughout dozens of flowers and cacti that you’ll only find in New Mexico. Keep your eyes peeled for animals, and if you’re a bird lover, you’re in for a real treat. This park near Carrizozo might not look like much from a distance, but once you explore it within, your jaw will fall to the floor.
