When visiting the sweet town of Taos, you might be thinking about hitting the ski hills to see sights from new heights and get an adrenaline rush. However, after hitting the hills you’ll probably have worked up an appetite. Thankfully, there’s an incredible cantina right up on this Taos ski hill and its history is as wholesome as its food. Not only is this spot packed with friendly faces that all of the locals know and love, but their Northern New Mexico chile recipe has also made waves across our state. Whether you’re looking to fill up on favorite Southwest dishes, get a kick in the pants from some truly good chile, or want to relax with a margarita amongst the hills, this alpine restaurant in Taos is a unique dining experience waiting to be had.
Welcome to Tim's Stray Dog Cantina located at the base of Taos Ski Valley.
The original owner, Tim, was working in St. Bernard for many years, which to the ski community was known as the "Big Dog." Tim left that community to open up his own restaurant in Taos Ski Valley and it seemed only fitting to name it Stray Dog Cantina. The new owners continue to uphold Tim's mission for the restaurant, which was to create a place people could enjoy great food in the ski valley.

Now, this spot has been a gathering place for over 30 years.
Whether you're an active skier on the mountain or a local in Taos, you probably know of Tim's Stray Dog Cantina and consider it a second home. This spot is a favorite amongst the locals, and they'll have you feeling right at home too.
We all know that flavorful green and red chile are must-haves for any Northern New Mexico restaurant, but Tim's takes their chile to the next level. All red and green chile sauces are made in-house using a special flame-roasted method that keeps all of the natural juices intact. Once the peppers are carefully peeled, nothing else is added. Be careful, as this chile is not processed and is not for amateurs - it's fiery hot!
Of course, their margaritas aren't half bad either.
Another reason people flock to Tim's is for their strong margaritas. There's no better place to sip on a strong drink than this beautiful atmosphere at the base of the mountains.
Whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this mountain town restaurant is the place to be.
Tim's Stray Dog Cantina is a go-to for breakfast before hitting the hills, and an amazing spot for enchiladas, burgers, or more any time of day. No matter what you order or when, you won't be disappointed!
For a seriously good meal in Taos, head to the hills and dine with the locals for an unforgettable experience.
