If you’re ready to be wide-eyed in surreal surroundings, make sure to put the Interdune Boardwalk hike in White Sands National Park on your list of New Mexico places to visit. White Sands is beautiful at any time of day, so while you can’t go wrong in the morning, evening, or mid-day, there is something extra peaceful about the pastel colors of the sunset. The hike is perfect for the whole family, or for a relaxing easy walk.
Located in Southern New Mexico, the park is made up of rare gypsum sand dunes and is unlike any other park in the country.
At just 0.4 miles total, the flat walk is great for admiring the stunning views that you’ll see all around you. The boardwalk is fully accessible for wheeled devices, and there is a shady structure on the path so you can take a break from the strong sunshine that can come in the middle of the day.
The delicate ecosystem of White Sands is fascinating, and you can learn all about it from the signs posted along the boardwalk. The area around the boardwalk is used for studying nature, but you can have a blast playing in the sand 3 miles down the way into the dunes.
Though you might think White Sands is groomed and put together by a landscaper for how flawless it looks, there are actually natural hills and formations that add to the visual experience.
If you’re looking for a really otherworldly moment, you’ll be in luck when the sun sets and you’ll find yourself in a real-life watercolor painting.
Stay a little longer to watch the moon rise and feel like one with your natural environment.
Take a look at the White Sands website and Facebook page for updates and facts about animal and plant life in the park.
