Grocery shopping is an unavoidable task that can fill you with dread or delight. Tip the scales in favor of delight, by mixing up your shopping experience with a visit to New Mexico’s indie markets. From farm stores to Indian groceries, your taste buds will thank you if you head to one of these enticing spots on your next shopping trip.
1. Toucan Market 1701 E. University Avenue, Las Cruces
Within this 15,000 square foot grocery store, you’ll discover everything you could want and plenty you didn’t know you needed – such as a curated selection of more than 600 wines! As you browse through Toucan’s produce, bakery, meat, and seafood sections, you’ll notice plenty of options for vegetarians and anyone avoiding gluten or monitoring sodium. Seniors (with ID) get 10% off on Tuesdays. The store is open 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. every day of the week.
2. Talin Market, 505 Cerrillos Road, Suite B-101, Santa Fe and 88 Louisiana Boulevard SE, Albuquerque
If you’re searching for spices from far-flung places or global sauces and drinks, then Talin Market hits the mark. The Albuquerque location has been around since 1978 and a second branch opened in Santa Fe a couple of years ago. That location has a ramen and spring roll bar on Fridays and Saturdays, and dumplings and noodles on Mondays. There’s also a pop-up dumpling house at the Duke City location on Fridays and Saturdays.
Store hours in Albuquerque are 8:30 a.m until 8:00 p.m., except on Sundays, when it’s 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. In Santa Fe, the hours are 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and the store is closed on Sundays.
3. Cid’s Food Market, 623 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, Taos
This family-owned grocery store has been around since 1986. It specializes in local and organic products, from meat and produce to bulk items and natural health and beauty. Cid’s is surprisingly large at 13,000 square feet and, in addition to its eco-friendly focus, the prepared food department really stands out. The store is open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., but is closed on Sundays.
4. Bode’s General Store, 21196 US-84, Abiquiu
Bode’s has been around since 1890! Admittedly, it was then called Grants Mercantile, but a name change doesn’t alter the enduring appeal of this place. From the outside, it appears to be just a gas station and general store. However, inside you’ll find grocery aisles stocked with everything from organic frozen meat to gelato.
The store is open from Monday to Thursday between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., on Friday until 8:00 p.m., on Saturday from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
5. Mountain View Market Co+op, 1300 El Paseo Road, Suite M, Las Cruces
This co-op was started by NMSU students in the 1970s and it’s a great spot to shop for unusual, organic, or locally-sourced items. Healthy and natural options abound. Other amenities here include a juice bar, hot bar, and salad/soup bar. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
6. Keller’s Farm Stores, 2912 Eubank NE Boulevard and 6100 H Coors Boulevard, Albuquerque
If you want quality meat that’s free of preservatives and hormones, look no further than this specialty meat store. Also known for its farm fresh eggs, Keller’s has been in business since 1946. However, this shop now carries a much wider array of products than you might expect, from coffee to kosher food - it’s heavy on items made in New Mexico. There are two Albuquerque locations, which are open Monday through Saturday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
7. Los Alamos Co+op Market, 95 Entrada, Los Alamos
A good selection of ethically-raised meat, cheese, and produce lies inside this co+op. Other positives include the store’s excellent deli and quality hot bar. This market is open between Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and, on Sundays, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
8. Bombay Spice, 6514 Central Avenue SE, Albuquerque
This family-run, Indian grocery store is the perfect spot to load up on spices. Check out the authentic snacks and the frozen section, along with the wide selection of dals. If you’ve ever been tempted to try cooking Indian dishes, this place should be your first stop. The shop is open daily, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
9. Farmer’s Country Market, 2800 Main Street and 800 W Hobbs Street, Roswell
These markets offer a massive assortment of meats, along with a deli and the usual aisles of fruit and veggies. Farmer’s Country Market is open from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. every day except Sunday, when it opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 9:00 p.m.
This is the time of year when farmers markets are in full swing, so don’t forget that you can find super fresh produce and many other gourmet treats at these 10 places in New Mexico , as well.
