There truly is no place like White Sands National Park in New Mexico. The large, gorgeous gypsum sand dunes are mesmerizing no matter where you are located in the park. However, there is much more to this national park than the pearly white sand. Forbes recently named White Sands National Park as one of the most beautiful places to savor sunsets in the United States and if you have spent your evenings in this national park in New Mexico, you’ll know this is no surprise.
While there is much to do during the day such as sledding down a sand dune or exploring the visitor center at White Sands National Park in New Mexico, some of the most spectacular views occur in the evening hours.

There are several established trails that will take you to various corners of the national park. These hikes will give you remarkable views of the sunsets.
The five main hikes in White Sands National Park are the Playa Trail, Dune Life Nature Trail, Interdune Boardwalk, Backcountry Camping Trail, and the Alkali Flat Trail. Along the Backcountry Trail, you will capture some of the most stunning views, but be prepared, as this hike is challenging.
If you don’t want to hike or camp, you can still enjoy the awe-inspiring sunsets inside the park. Hop in your car and take the 16-mile round-trip Dunes Drive.
This road will take you to some of the most mesmerizing views and many amenities within the park such as picnic tables and restrooms. You can learn more about this drive here.
