New Mexico is home to some of the country’s richest history, but history isn’t just in the past for the Land of Enchantment. Just a few years ago, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport was built in our great state, and now you can tour it and learn about what’s to come. We dream of a day where anyone can fly up into the orbit, and we’re getting that much closer to what seems like a science-fiction dream. Head on over to the Spaceport’s visitors center in Truth or Consequences to see all of the action up close.
Welcome to Spaceport America: the world’s first commercial spaceport. You can head on over to the visitor center in Truth or Consequences for an amazing tour that takes you to the spaceport.
The Spaceport is the first purpose-driven commercial spaceport, meaning Spaceport America is trying to make space travel as easy as air travel is today. While this seems far-fetched, they’re getting closer than ever. In the meantime, you can visit the Spaceport for a fun and interactive experience.
If you head to Truth or Consequences, you’ll find the Spaceport’s visitor center. From here you can take a tour to view a real commercial space launch facility. Inside the historic adobe visitor center are many interactive and educational exhibits about space and the Spaceport.
From here, you can purchase merchandise before jumping on a shuttle to Space America. Once you arrive, you’ll walk up the Astronaut Walk and be greeted by the Gateway Gallery.
The Spaceport itself is full of activities. The G-Shock simulator will allow you to feel what astronauts experience during a rapid takeoff, and feel what it feels like when they’re up in space.
The entire Spaceport America Experience lasts about four hours, and you’ll be able to talk to crewmembers and see the high-tech fire station. Each tour ends with a photo opportunity so that you can always remember your trip to America’s only commercial spaceport.
Spaceport America might not allow you to jump on a spaceship and fly to another planet quite yet, but this interactive experience is an awesome way to see the spaceport up close and dream of the future.
Spaceport America is located at 901 E. University Ave., Las Cruces, NM. Tours are available Saturdays and Sundays. There’s a morning tour and an afternoon tour available. To learn more and to book your tour, you can visit their website right here.
