Here in New Mexico, we love our state parks. While some of our largest state parks often receive a lot of attention, our smaller state parks are just as mighty. In fact, one of the smallest state parks in New Mexico — Rio Grande Nature Center State Park — is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on every individual’s bucket list. In fact, don’t be surprised if this becomes your favorite state park in the Land of Enchantment.
You’ll find the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park adjacent to the Rio Grande in Albuquerque. This is a day-use-only state park, and believe us, you’ll want to stay the entire day.
This state park is technically a 38-acre wildlife preserve located on the Rio Grande flyway. It is one destination where you will not want to forget a camera as there are picturesque views everywhere you turn.
Stop by the Visitor center to learn more about this area and some of the wildlife that you may see during your visit. You can also check out the park's unique Nature Shop.
As you explore, you’ll find both indoor and outdoor wildlife viewing areas. This state park provides one of the best opportunities in the state for birdwatching as you may see various bird species in just a short while.
You’ll also want to walk around the gardens. There is the beautiful Mariposaville Pollinator Garden and the Native Plant Garden which are both beautiful in every way.
Whether you stop to look for wildlife or you just want to admire the many plants in this state park, take your time and enjoy Mother Nature’s greatest creations. You definitely won’t want to rush through this New Mexico state park.
And, if you plan your visit just right, you may be able to attend one of the many festivals and special events taking place at this New Mexico state park.
