There are many well-known and famous people who call New Mexico home. In fact, we created a list of 11 famous people who hail from the Land of Enchantment. However, there is one who you may not know by name but you likely know his works. For example, are you familiar with the Flintstones? Scooby-Doo? Tom and Jerry? If so, you have William Hanna, an American animator, to thank. He was born in Melrose, New Mexico, a charming small town that many New Mexicans don’t even know exists.
Melrose is actually a small village located in Curry County, right along Highway 60. Approximately 600 people call this area home.
Hanna was born in 1910. He had a successful career as an animator, winning seven Academy Awards and eight Emmy awards. Unfortunately, Hanna passed away in 2001 at the age of 90.

If you visit William Hanna's hometown of Melrose today, you won't find too many attractions. However, if you are willing to take a short drive, in less than an hour, you can visit five different state parks including Oasis State Park and Sumner Lake State Park.
For even more adventure, drive less than 30 miles into Clovis and check out the Hillcrest Park Zoo. This zoo has been in operation since the 1930s and is home to all types of animals from a giraffe to a tiger.
Melrose, New Mexico may be small but it is still one town in the Land of Enchantment that every New Mexican should know about and it’s certainly worth a visit.
