Roasting in late summer doesn’t just refer to those sweltering New Mexico temperatures. For native New Mexicans, this time of year is the season for roasting chiles and we just happen to be in peak season, when these peppers are ripe and hot. This year, make your chile picking and roasting a family affair with a day trip to Big Jim Farms.
Located in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, Big Jim Farms is an organic u-pick chile farm that just opened for the fall season.
The Wagner family has been growing chiles for more than a century and have even produced their own varieties, so you can bet these peppers pack quite the flavor punch.

Between late August and October, Big Jim Farms hosts daily u-pick events the entire family can enjoy.
There is no admission to pick peppers; simply arrive with the family, water, hats, and sunscreen. You'll pay for the chiles by the pound, bushel, or sack before heading home.
