When it comes to natural beauties, the Land of Enchantment doesn’t disappoint. Areas like White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, and Tent Rocks offer some stunning views. But plenty of other areas across the state are also severely underrated in their natural beauty. One such place is New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness.

Nearly a century ago, the world's very first designated wilderness area was established right here in New Mexico.

Covering approximately 27 square miles of immaculate forest, canyons, and grasslands, the Gila Wilderness remains the largest wilderness area in the state.
Located in the far western region of New Mexico just north of Silver City, this wilderness area appears almost untouched by humans.

Only one road meanders along a narrow border of the wilderness area and commercial exploits are not permitted. Your best bet to explore the area? On foot or horseback.
The Gila Wilderness was founded on June 3, 1924 at the urging of writer, conservationist, and Forest Service employee, Aldo Leopold.

At the time, a network of roads was planned to be constructed, which would ultimately lead to the commercial development of the area. Instead, approximately 755,000 acres were reserved to remain virtually untouched.

The creation of the Gila Wilderness and its nearby Aldo Leopold Wilderness sparked a movement to create more wilderness areas across the country.

This eventually led to the 1964 National Wilderness Act to create the National Wilderness Preservation System. Today, there are approximately 800 designated wilderness areas across the country that protect undeveloped land.
Today, the Gila Wilderness is perfect for seeking solitude in nature.

Hundreds of miles of hiking trails are spread across the rugged landscape and the Gila River winds its way through the Wilderness. Small hot springs are scattered across the landscape and the Gila Cliff Dwellings offer some insight into how humans have called this land home.
The Gila Wilderness is located in western New Mexico within the Gila National Forest.
