It’s not a secret that New Mexico is full of ghost towns and places that are said to have strange, paranormal happenings. From the incident in Roswell, to haunted hotels, the Land of Enchantment has many attractions that are just creepy.

This town outside of Truth or Consequences was once a bustling, happy place which much farming and ranching. Though the area still produces many crops, the town is unincorporated and is said to be one of the most haunted towns in our state. Some say this town is safe to drive through, but only the brave will go at night or alone. This historic town is not for the faint of heart. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

This little unincorporated town just north of Truth or Consequences has quite the history, and what remains will leave you with chills.
This town was founded in 1856 and was originally called Cañada Alamosa, which was Spanish for "Canyon of the Cottonwoods".

In 1881, the cotton-lined canyon town was renamed to Monticello after the first postmaster to ever work in the town, and he hailed from Monticello, New York. Originally, the town was filled with farmers and ranchers, and at one point was bustling with activity. Under 100 families currently reside in Monticello.

Many buildings are left behind, including the old schoolhouse and church. The school specifically is hollow, with only exterior walls remaining. It seems as though the school burnt down many years ago, but there are no stories to confirm or deny this.

It’s often said that the church used to be the postmasters house, but his home was actually a stage coach stop. However, the church remains and is still used for Mass every Sunday. Depsite being a beautiful building, many strange sightings have happened at this place of worship. It’s said that when the church is empty, many have witnessed a mysterious bright light which has been named the "Monticello Light". Rumor has it that this light once followed a local home, and the rest is history.

There are no gas stations or services in Monticello, so if you dare explore the town yourself, make sure to fill up on gas. Only the brave will go alone.

If you dare, you’ll find Monticello about 25 miles north of Truth or Consequences, off Highway 142.
