New Mexico is home to many fascinating pieces of history, and many of those lie within our ghost towns. This abandoned village and mining town tucked away in the Gila National Forest is a quiet town with quite a bit of history. While there are many other exciting hikes within this famous forest, there’s nothing quite as eerie or interesting as this little shadow of a mining town that used to be bustling with life. Let’s head on over to Gila National Forest and take a short trek to this old town; you may even find another hike within.

Mogollon is a former mining town in Southwest New Mexico. The town was founded in the 1880s and was even more isolated then than it is now.

Once you get to NM-159, deep within the Gila National Forest and just north of Glenwood, you can hike up the road upon Silver Creek Canyon and find this old ghost town.

This is a true old west town and mining town. It was home to the Little Fannie Mine which produced high amounts of gold and silver, making Mogollon a prosperous town. At it's prime, the town was home to 5,000 residents. While life was prosperous in Mogollon, it wasn't always easy. Many floods and fires have happened in the town, as well as numerous mining incidents and illnesses.

As you walk throughout Mogollon, you'll be reminded of the past from long ago while seeing the effort that's been taken to keep the ghost town preserved. Like many mining towns, Mogollon was known to be a wild place with many saloons.

Within the abandoned village, you'll also find a smaller hike. The Graveyard Gulch will take you up a rough road to the local graveyard. Upon the 1.5-mile hike, you'll find many remnants from the past that have now been abandoned. You'll notice that the graveyard is quite large due to all of the tragedy that has struck the town throughout the years.
