I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
New Mexico’s landscape is quite varied. From deserts to woodlands, from canyons to mountains, there are some epic hikes to tackle throughout the state. But if you crave being by the water, there’s a secluded hike in New Mexico that runs alongside one of the state’s iconic rivers. Let’s discover the Vista Verde Trail in the Rio Grande Gorge!
While getaways are great, so are hikes. Both leave us renewed and refreshed but hiking also connects us to nature. If you're in the mood for a hike in a secluded area with views, the Vista Verde Trail is hard to beat.
This out-and-back trail is approximately 2.5 miles long and is rated easy on AllTrails. There's only a 229-foot elevation gain as well, but the trail is flat most of the way.
The trail will take you along the gorge with some of the most stunning views above the river. At one point in the trail, you'll find a bench where you can sit and soak in the scenery.
Views aside, another incredible aspect of this trail is the number of petroglyphs you'll see. These symbols were carved in the rocks by Native American tribes as well as Spanish travelers centuries ago, and are a remarkable sight to see.
Have you ever taken the Vista Verde Trail through the Rio Grande Gorge? Do you have another secluded hike in New Mexico you’d like to share? Let us know! For more information on the Vista Verde Trail, visit AllTrails.
