As far as hiking goes in the Land of Enchantment, there are countless peaks and valleys to choose from. This one trail in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness might be a bit strenuous, but it’s arguably one of the most beautiful payoffs in the country. Get a sturdy hiking stick and lots of water, and get ready to hike way up into the clouds for a view like you’ve never seen before.
Welcome to the majestic and breathtaking Gavilan Trail.
This out-and-back trail features many steep climbs and rough terrain, but it's totally doable for any experienced hiker. You might want to bring a walking stick for the climb back down.
The trail offers many dips and turns, and meets up with other trails. One option is to hike up to Lobo Peak. The hike is very steep, but once you reach the top, the payoffs are so worth it.
Gavilan Trail is located near Taos Ski Valley off Highway 150.
